About the role:

We are looking for a quantitative Marine Habitat Mapping Scientist to join our dynamic Seafloor & Habitat Mapping Team.  We carry out fundamental and applied research into the structure, spatial distribution, status and evolution of marine habitats, from shallow waters to the deep sea.

You will contribute your expertise to a number of funded national and international programmes, including the UK National Capability CLASS programme (Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science, http://prj.noc.ac.uk/class/). You will help drive cutting-edge habitat mapping research, with the aim of advancing our understanding of marine habitats under threat from climate change and human activities. You will make use of the latest innovations in marine robotic platforms and sensors, and will contribute to the development and application of advanced data analysis techniques. You will also collaborate on projects with our partners in developing countries (e.g. SOLSTICE, https://www.solstice-wio.org; ACCORD, CME, https://noc.ac.uk/project/cme-programme); sharing science and knowledge expertise.

This role combines data collection at sea, analysis, interpretation, publication and communication to both scientific and stakeholder audiences. You will contribute to, and will receive training in, the development of new research funding proposals for a wide range of funding stakeholders. You will be involved in the supervision of research students (MSc, PhD).

About you:

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in earth sciences, engineering or environmental/marine sciences, and an enthusiasm for marine geomorphology and benthic habitats. We are looking for candidates with strong numerical and mathematical skills, particularly applied to spatial problems and analysis. You will be fully familiar with the applications of GIS, within a marine and habitat mapping context if possible. Experience in deep-water research, the use of marine acoustics, and the use of marine robotic or autonomous systems is welcomed.

You will demonstrate an excellent track record in scientific publication appropriate for your career stage, and potential for the development of a coherent research portfolio that can attract funding. We are especially looking for candidates who can work across disciplines and think ‘outside the box’.

Other information:

The starting salary for this position will be between £29,181 and £33,558 per annum (Band 6).

Depending upon skills and experience, additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates between £500 and £2,000.  This will be evidenced against track record of research, publication, funding, and experience in relevant fields.

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean. The Seafloor and Habitat Mapping Team is based in the Marine Geoscience Group in Southampton, but also works in close collaboration with colleagues from all research disciplines at NOC (Ocean Biogeochemistry & Ecosystems, Marine Physics & Modelling, Ocean Technology). The Team have an international reputation as leaders in the use of deep-water robotic vehicles to map complex deep-sea environments, and pioneered the mapping and study of deep-water vertical cliff habitats. The Team also have a strong track record in the application and development of automated seafloor classification techniques in order to improve the objectivity and repeatability of the habitat mapping process.
